For a therapy practice that bills insurance, TherapyNotes charges less per claim than SimplePractice: $0.14 against $0.39. Both include telehealth on every plan. Jane fits a practice where therapy sits beside massage, physical therapy, chiropractic or acupuncture, because it was built for clinics with several kinds of practitioner.

Who each one is built for

SimplePractice serves therapists, speech and occupational therapists, and psychiatrists, solo or in a group. TherapyNotes is for mental and behavioral health only, and allows unlimited non clinical staff on the Group plan. Jane names massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic and mental health, and is built for a solo practitioner or a clinic with several disciplines.

Insurance billing

All three file claims and receive remittances. TherapyNotes and Jane both send claims through Claim.MD. SimplePractice charges $0.15 for each coverage check, free on the Plus plan until 31 March 2027. Its Insurance Navigator makes checks automatic for a fee starting at $1.79 a claim, and had a waiting list on 14 October 2026.

What you can take with you if you leave

SimplePractice exports notes, documents, intake forms, messages, claims and invoices in a password protected file. Contacts come out as a contact card file. Appointments are not in that export and come from a separate report. Jane exports patients and appointments as spreadsheets and each chart as a PDF, and provides one free batch chart export per practitioner when you leave. TherapyNotes publishes little about leaving. Jane's guide to importing from TherapyNotes says client and appointment lists export as spreadsheets and charts one client at a time, unless TherapyNotes does a bulk export for a fee.

Billing balances do not move between any of them. Print who owes what before the switch.

A practice we moved

An acupuncture practice in Santa Cruz chose Jane over two other systems and over staying put. Three things decided it. Codes travel from the signed chart note onto the claim without being typed a second time, and a patient's coverage can be checked before the visit. The third was support: the practice will train apprentices, and help that only comes by email turns the owner into the help desk. Jane has no QuickBooks connection, which was known and planned for before anything was signed.

Common questions

Is SimplePractice or TherapyNotes cheaper?

For one therapist, SimplePractice starts at $49 a month and TherapyNotes Solo is $69. Insurance changes the sum. SimplePractice claims cost $0.39 each from 1 October 2026, and TherapyNotes claims cost $0.14. A therapist filing 100 claims a month pays $39 on SimplePractice. On TherapyNotes the same therapist pays $14, or $28 once each claim's remittance is counted.

Can I move from SimplePractice to Jane?

Yes. SimplePractice exports notes, documents and invoices in one file, and appointments from a separate report, and Jane imports patients and appointments. Chart notes usually arrive as documents you can read but not edit. Billing balances have to be carried across by hand.

Does Jane connect to QuickBooks?

Not directly. Jane's team has confirmed it has no QuickBooks connection, so payments are reconciled from Jane's scheduled reports instead.
